A massage therapist leaning in with firm forearm pressure on a client's back.

Is deep tissue massage painful?

Firm pressure can feel intense, but it shouldn't be unbearable, and you can ask for less at any time.

You set the pressure

Tell your therapist how firm you want it before you start, and name any spot you'd like avoided or handled gently. Pressure should stay within your comfort level, and lighter work, a pause or a stop are all easy to ask for.

Firm is what deep tissue massage at Wonder Spa is for. Discomfort you can't stand isn't part of the deal.

How to ask for less

Say "a little lighter, please." If you notice yourself tensing against the pressure or holding your breath, that's your cue to speak up and ask for an adjustment.

Want something gentler from the start? Swedish massage uses light to medium pressure.
